What is advocacy journalism?

Advocacy journalism pushes back.

Advocacy journalism is described as community journalism or movement journalism. This form of journalism advocates for a position, takes a point of view, and is not neutral. This is in contrast to traditional journalism, which is tediously neutral. 🐙

Why is advocacy journalism important?

Advocacy journalism fills the gaps.

Between news deserts, industry layoffs, and the five filters of mass media, communities experiencing the brunt of systemic failures can use advocacy journalism to hold truth to power and to amplify their story, so others know they aren't alone. You don't have to wait for corporate media to tell your story. 🐙

Guest Lecturing

I put lectures together to present to journalism college students. In it, we explore news deserts, industry layoffs, current advocacy journalists and publications, and the current state of media monopolies.

For non-journalism students, we discuss history and its use of media.
